Description:
The City of Portsmouth is seeking a highly skilled self-starter to perform responsible technical work in the operation of the Water Treatment Plant. Work involves collecting and testing water samples and controlling mechanical, electrical, electronic and chemical equipment involved in pumping and/or treating water. The employee will also be responsible for determining and adjusting chemical feeds as required. Maintains records of chemical usage and daily pumpage for monthly reporting; performs routine preventive maintenance for online analytical equipment and chemical pumps; monitor and control pumpage to distribution system. Licensed operator will have designation as an operator in "responsible charge" requiring the operator to have the duty and the authority to operate waterworks. Salary includes rotating 12-hour shifts to include overtime and rotating weekends.

Education/Experience:
Vocational or technical diploma in Water Treatment or a related field; a Bachelor's or Associate’s Degree in an Engineering or Science related field is preferred, and a minimum of 6 years experience in water treatment operations; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Requires certification as a Class I or II Waterworks Operator by the Commonwealth of Virginia or the ability to obtain certification as a Class I or II Waterworks Operator by the Commonwealth of Virginia within one (1) year of date of hire. A Class II License can be obtained with a Bachelor’s Degree in an engineering or science related field and 1½ years of experience. A Class I License can then be obtained with another year of experience while holding the Class II. Must possess a valid Driver's License issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia or have the ability to obtain a Driver's License issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia within 60 days of hire. Salaries: Class I Certification Salary $38,097 - Class II Certification Salary $34,573. SELECTED CANDIDATES MUST PASS A CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK, DRUG SCREEN AND PHYSICAL.
