May
"Adult Abuse Prevention Month"

Governor Kaine has proclaimed May as Adult Abuse Prevention Month in Virginia.
There were over 14,000 Adult Protective Services reports in Virginia last year, which is
a 36 per cent increase in the last ten years. As our population ages, we recognize the need
to be proactive in meeting the needs of those affected citizens and their families.
During the month of May several activities have been planned by the Portsmouth Department of Social Services to educate the community. Training in the areas of recognizing and reporting financial exploitation, abuse, and neglect will be provided to local barks, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and medical facilities. Staff will participate in related trainings and Adult Foster Care Providers will be recognized for their excellent provision of care to our consumers. Adult prevention flyers and brochures are available to our citizens. You may contact Ms. Ellen Amos at 405-1800, extension 8114 for the printed materials.
You may also access State materials that can be used to to help organizations and individuals educate their communities and increase public awareness about the abuse, neglect, and exploitation of older adults and persons with disabilities
