Ms. Angel Jones was recently appointed the City Manager of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia. In this role, she is the chief executive officer of the city, serving a seven-member City Council (Mayor, Vice Mayor, and five council members), responsible for the proper administration of the city government.
Prior to joining the City of Portsmouth, Ms. Jones spent eight years in the private sector as a Senior Consultant providing project and risk management expertise to federal agencies including Health and Human Services and Housing and Urban Development.
Ms. Jones has over 30 years of executive management experience in all levels of government and the private sector. She served as the City Manager and City Manager Pro Tem in Gaithersburg, MD, and Eugene, OR, respectively becoming the first appointed female and African American to hold both positions.
Ms. Jones is a retired Captain from the United States Army Reserves after serving 10 years as a finance and equal opportunity officer.
Ms. Jones is a member of various professional and civic organizations including the International City/County Management Association, National Forum for Black Public Administrators, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (Silver Life Member), and the Girl Scouts of the USA (Life Member).
Ms. Jones is a 1984 Suma Cum Laude graduate of Virginia Union University with a degree in Accounting. She also has continuing education certificates from the University of Virginia’s Senior Executive Institute (SEI) program and the National Forum for Black Public Administrators (NFBPA) Executive Leadership Institute.
She is a proud mom of one son, Blake.
