Inclement Weather Policy

In the event that the Portsmouth General District Court is closed for inclement weather, the following procedures apply. It is important to note the type of case (civil, traffic or criminal) you have, as each type has differing policies.

                                                                 CIVIL CASES

Civil cases that are set to be heard on a particular date that the court closes for inclement weather will have their case heard on the same day of the week on the following week:

For example:  If your case was to be heard on a Monday and the court is closed, your case will automatically
be set for the following Monday.

If in doubt, please call a member of our civil team at 757-393-8624 to confirm.

                                                                  TRAFFIC CASES

Traffic cases that are set to be heard on a particular date that the court closes for inclement weather will be rescheduled by the court; notices of the change will be generated and sent to the parties concerned on the case. If you are set to appear for a traffic matter and you have a private attorney, public defender or court appointed attorney, it is advised to contact their office as soon as possible.

If in doubt, please call a member of our traffic team at 757-393-8506 to confirm.

                                                                  CRIMINAL CASES

Criminal cases that are set to be heard on a particular date that the court closes for inclement weather will be rescheduled; if you are set to appear on a criminal matter and you have a private attorney or a public defender, it is advised to contact their office as soon as possible.

If in doubt, please call a member of our criminal team at 757-393-8681 to confirm.

                                                                     WEEKEND JAIL

Anyone scheduled to report to jail to serve their sentence on weekends that is unable to report on Friday because of inclement weather should contact the court the following Monday morning.
